Why You Have Poor Result Even After Studying
There are a number of possible reasons that students get poor grades, even after studying.
Some are external factors, such as the
subject matter is too difficult, the teacher is hard to understand, and
problems at home. Other reasons have to do with student attitudes, such
as didn’t do homework and goofed off in class. Finally, there are
reasons related to personal issues, such as test anxiety and problems
concentrating.
If you have been getting poor grades and
you see the reason for it, you can try to rectify the situation and get
back on the right track.
Questions you may have include:
- What are external reasons for poor grades?
- What are attitude reasons for poor grades?
- What are personal issues reasons for poor grades?
External factors for poor grades
External factors that affect your grades
are somewhat out of your control. If the subject is too difficult or you
have an ineffective teacher, you might have to drop the course, if you
can.
Subject matter too difficult
It is possible that you took a course
where the subject matter was too difficult for you to understand.
Sometimes the pace is too fast for you to keep up. Another problem is
that you did not learn required material in previous classes.
In college, you are able to drop out of
the class if it is too difficult. But if you can’t drop a class, seek
help. Let your teacher know you are having problems, and perhaps you can
get some help with the class. That is why it is good to be selective in
picking courses to take.
Teacher not very good
Some teachers should not be teachers.
Some may have a heavy foreign accent that
makes it difficult to understand. Others can’t explain things in a
clear manner. And some may not want to explain things at all. They say,
“You should have learned that last year, so I’m not going to explain it
over again.”
There are also teachers who don’t like
certain students, and that can affect their grades. But also, some
students don’t like certain teachers and thus may not cooperate in
class.
Having a poor teacher can make it
difficult to get a good grade in the course. But it is not an excuse for
failing the course. The best thing to do is to make the most of it this
term, but then try to get a better teacher the next semester.
Difficult study environment
Some students have a difficult study
environment at home. Perhaps there is too much noise or not a place to
do required homework.
In such a situation, you may have to do much of your studying and homework at school or in the library.
Poor attitudes lead to poor grades
If you have poor attitudes toward school and studying, it can result in getting poor or failing grades.
Lack of motivation
Sometimes you can lack the motivation to do well in school.
One big reason for a lack the motivation
is that you have no dreams of what you want to do or can see no benefit
from going to school.
It is good to have dreams.
Didn’t do homework
One of the biggest reasons students fail is because they didn’t study or do their homework.
Goofed off
Some students often skip classes. Others attend classes but don’t pay attention. Finally, some simply goof off during class.
Miscellaneous poor attitudes
There are also some miscellaneous poor attitudes that can affect your grades. They include when you:
- Want to punish your parents
- Fear success
- Don’t like the subject
- Don’t like school
- Are bored
Note that there is nothing listed about you not being smart enough to succeed.
Personal issues
Personal issues can also affect your
grades. Procrastination and putting off tasks can affect your grades.
Also, not being good in taking tests is a big factor in getting poor
grades.
Procrastinates
Some students put off tasks such as doing
homework or studying for a test by doing something else in its place.
They make excuses for doing work.
Procrastination is a habit that is difficult to overcome.
Has problems taking tests
Although grades are usually based on test
scores and sometimes on homework grades and class participation, there
are reason behind the fact that those scores may be poor or less than
desired.
Not being good in taking tests or being
shy about class participation can affect your grades, but they also can
be corrected, and teachers usually realize that your performance is not
from lack of trying.
Inyang always handed in excellent homework, but when it came to tests, he did not fair very well. In fact, he failed the final exam.Doing poorly in tests because you did not pay attention or study is inexcusable and is just setting yourself up for poor or failing grades. Perhaps something is missing in your self-esteem, because it indicates you really don’t care about your grades. Or, it could be that you don’t have a clue that you need to work to get rewards
His teacher could see that Inyang knew the material and was a hard-worker, but he just wasn’t good in taking tests. After thinking it over, the teacher still gave Jin Yee a top grade in the class.
