SUG SHUTS DOWN ALVAN IKOKU COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, OWERRI.

Students of Alvan Ikeokwu Federal College of Education, AIFEC, Owerri, on Monday shut down academic and
administrative activities on the campus following what the
A grieved students described as the management's insensitive to their plights.
The students living in the school hostels had Sunday
raised their disenchantment over management's "No
school fees no examination" policy.
The exams which were billed to start the next day (Monday) were halted by the surging students who have
barricaded the school main gates, demanding that the
policy be lifted.
The students with placards, equally, complained of lack of electricity
supply for the students living in the school hostels and
that the 2015/2016 academic year financial budget of
students Union Government be released among other
things. The peaceful demonstration turned violent when security men
on campus together with policemen attached to Imo State
Police Command threw teargas at them.
A student in the school informed that the teargas canister gave one
student deep cut, while 15 students said to be asmathic
patients are currently being hospitalized in an
undisclosed hospital.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in the state, Mr
Andrew Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent of Police,
DSP, confirmed the arrest of six students.
The Police spokesperson said that the students instigated
violence on the campus by throwing stones on the
college provost who was on hand to address the enraged
students.
On the use of teargas on the students, Mr Enwerem
averred that the policemen had no alternatives, as they
were committed to returning normalcy on the campus.
