All other protocols duly observed.
It is with immense gratitude to God Almighty that I address you today, may befor the last time in the capacity of the Students’ Union Government President of
the Federal University of technology Owerri.
As you are aware, my tenure as the president comes to a close today. And incompliance with the Students’ Union constitution, I am required to handover the
machinery of the Union to another person who will occupy the seat of the
president and pilot the affairs of the union for the next one year.
Following the outcome of the September 5th, 2016/2017 SUG election, Rotr.
Akano Nnaemeka who was declared winner of the election by the Independent
Students’ Electoral Commission (ISEC) is the one who shall be taking over me, Icongratulate him and his team of executive on their victory at the polls and wish
them a successful tenure.
For me, it has been a very interesting time working with all segments of theuniversity community. Since September 8th 2015 when we assumed office up to
this moment, it has been a period of studentship-learning about capacities,
talents and dispositions of the students. It was also an opportunity to offerleadership in both peaceful times and crisis period. In the course of offering
leadership, we enjoined the time, we also experienced frustrations and
encountered a number of challenges that I may not be able to recount here. In
all, I found students to be of immense faith, a people with unquestionablecommitment to equity, fairness and justice, all of which constitute basically on
the success of ALUTA REUNION.
Whatever the experience we had in the course of providing leadership, the timehas come for us to leave.
As written in the Scripture in the book of Ecclesiastes 3:1; “To everything thereis a season and a time to every purpose under heaven”. There was a time toassume office and now is the time to handover.
We are handing over to another set of executive today with a great sense of
fulfillment based on our modest accomplishments. May be, we did not take SUGto lofty heights, but certainly, we have laid a solid foundation for the growth ofthe Union which I strongly believe the succeeding administration will leverageon.
At the onset of our administration, we believed that the most effective leadershipis by example, not edict. Nearly 90% of how people learn is by visual, this aloneexplain why effective leadership is more caught than taught.

Fellow Nigeria students,
In the course of providing leadership to our students, we had to sometimes dothings to the interest of the students but as human choice, many people werepositively affected while to some, it did not go down well.
As we exit the stage, we the Aluta reunion Executive Member of the 17th republicsincerely apologize to all those who might have been at the receiving end of someof our actions as we also have forgotten all those who wronged us in the courseof our service.
I cannot conclude this address without placing on record the immeasurablesupport I received from Prof, M. C. Ofoh the dean of students who firmly stoodby me and making it possible for me to have the stability of mind to render goodservices. My appreciation to Prof. Chigozie Cyril Asiabaka for his fatherly love, and to our Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Francis Chukwuemeka Eze for the immensesupport for the union.

VENUE; SUG RESOURCE CENTRE – FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY OWERRI CAMPUS. TIME: 2:00 pm.
The vice Chancellor,
Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics,
Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration,
The University Registrar,
The Bursar,
The University Librarian,
Dean of Students' Affairs,
Associate Dean of Students' Affairs,
Distinguished College of Deans of Schools,
Directors of Units,
Heads Of Departments,
Esteemed Lecturers and Staff,
Distinguished ladies and Gentlemen,
Foremost, I give absolute thanks to God almighty who in His infinite goodness and love, made this day a success in my life.
I approach today’s inauguration and my service as President of Students' Union Government, Federal University of Technology, Owerri with a sense of humility.
As a lifelong motivator and student, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of so many through leadership of our great Union.
I am pleased to be surrounded by the esteemed personalities in the University management, staff, colleague leaders, students', alumni and friends of the University, as well as many members of my family.
And to welcome and thank my quintessential predecessor Comr. Ezenwa Obinna E. (SUG President of the 17th Assembly, ALUTA RE-UNION), and other past SUG leaders of FUTO, SUG Presidents and student leaders from across the state, and colleagues and friends who have helped shape my academic and personal growth, for being here today.
I want to thank Futoites for the confidence they have shown in me, as well as the members of the University Management for their welcoming embrace.
I salute the Dean and Associate Dean Student Affairs Unit, DSS personel, NANS Delegates, ISEC Chairman and commissioners, for organizing arguably the most peaceful, free, transparent and credible Election, which in turn has produced the finest student leaders the institution can ever have.
I offer special thanks to the Vice Chancellor for his remarkable stewardship of this great institution. He has given us an ambience rich in intellectual diversity, a stunning physical campus, and numerous academic programs that are amongst the best in the Country.
He has been particularly generous with his time, and at every turn gracious throughout this leadership transition.
I must also thank the chaplains of STACC and ACOL, and Rev. Sister Odor, for their prayers. As well as other individuals, whose goodwill, support and invaluable intercession brought me here.
I thank my darling sister Olaedo and her husband Owen, and Bro. Eddy for gracing the occasion. And to make up for those distant days when her much-too-serious son would not acknowledge her presence at the back of the classroom on parents’ day, I offer a very public “Hi, Mom!” and thank my mother, Scholastica.
She and my father Prince Edwin were a constant source of encouragement for an unusual kid who showcased a defiant zeal to attain great heights in life.
***
A love of learning, a longing for discovery, and a commitment to pursue Excellence are the underpinnings of a great University. I am finding each of these here at FUTO in abundance.
Every day, I am struck by the intellectual passion and sense of dignity that FUTO instills in its students, management, staff, and alumni.
I have spent much of my first six weeks as president-elect exploring these exceptional values.
I am walking in new directions, and I am asking a lot of questions. I am meeting with staff, students' and student leaders of various departments and faculties, learning their aspirations, what they are most proud of, and what they are anxious about as we move forward together.
More than anything, I am listening.
There is no shortage of opinions or ideas, and they are always voiced with a desire to make FUTO better.
In the same vein, I encourage the Members –elect of Students’ Representative Council, to approach parliamentarian duties with a sense of consciousness, mindset of goodwill, sound judgment and service to humanity. To seek new ideas and propose legislation that target to alleviate student challenges, and to aid the Executive and Judiciary achieve effective governance.
Although, often times than not, a greater number of its majority are most likely co-opted by partisan influence. They are cajoled to see from the wrong perspective, the collective strength of the Legislative House as a tool to oppose projects of the Executive Council.
Such wrongheaded ideology, however right as it may seem, is absolutely wrong and should be discarded.
The students' Union Government is not, by any means, a forum for rivalry among its leaders. Instead, it is and always should be a consortium of great minds to promote democracy, civility, unity, peaceful co-existence and better friendship among students.
However, some amongst us, whom as a result of partisan affiliation may have been fed with a misguided orientation, that your sole aim is dispute creation. It is of good forbearing to eschew any such thought(s) or effort(s) that tilts towards devotement of any member of the Executive Council.
Nevertheless, I am pretty well convinced that, the Presentable student Leaders of the 18TH Assembly, ALUTA EXCELLENCE are united and, with collective effort from one and all, shall stand indivisible till the end.
***
My seventeen predecessors have led this Union with a keen eye on students’ challenges and our obligations as a body to serve and protect the interest of Nigerian students in FUTO. To acknowledge but a few;
Comrade Aboyim Chigozie in 2003/2004 laid the foundation for the SUG Secretariat Building.
Comrade Anyanwu Obinna, who served in 2009/2010, completed the project.
Comrade Okereke Godson Bishop, in 2012/2013, an Entrepreneur per excellence, sighted the need for human resource development, and thus laid the foundation for SUG resource Centre. As well as the Aiabaka Square.
Comrade Chimezie Wisdom in 2013/2014 completed the Asiabaka Square project.
Comrade Onochie David Edozie.... successfully completed the SUG Resource Centre project 2014/2015. Also, he ensured the rehabilitation and standard reconstruction of FUTO Back-Gate.
Comr. Ezenwa Obinna E., the respected leader of 2015/2016 administration, a lifelong achiever and socialite, promoted the reconstruction and refurbishment of Asiabaka Square
, construction of SUG Cafeteria and construction of Re-Union garden, to serve as a recreational centre for all students. The Landmark project is near completion, and will be supervised during my administration.
All these outstanding projects stand to serve as a lifetime legacy of their leadership of this great Union.
I am grateful for their collective leadership. They have helped to define and elevate our standing as the country’s second best Students' Union Government.
I too have aspirations for FUTO SUG.
I am committed to enhancing the University’s already eminent standing as a place where gifted students focus on research, learning, and mentoring peers as well as, the rising generation to become engaged citizens and tomorrow’s leaders in all walks of life.
The life of the mind, a life committed to discovery, education and leadership and positive impart to society, is a life unlike any other. Hence, being the apex student leader at a great university, like FUTO, is a remarkable privilege.
I want FUTO to be a place where students' always believe they can do their best work.
The Akano Nnaemeka led- administration would be anchored on the vision, “To be Students Union Government of FUTO, an exceptional Union, where leaders emerge, transforms lives and promotes economic progress, and where we pursue together understanding and discovery that will transform our local community, nation and world, for good.”
Collectively, and in harmony with the Security outfits on Campus and beyond, we shall step-up the fight against Cultism, Theft on Campus , Student-student intimidation, Examination mal-practice and other social vices.
This administration will also run an open door policy where students’ concerns shall be prompt and adequately addressed . This means surrounding our students with outstanding colleagues, and teachers, providing cutting-edge infrastructure, developing the resources to support innovative research and teaching, and last but not least, celebrating their successes.
I shall not relent in soliciting on behalf of FUTO students' to our loving Vice Chancellor, to make these life aiding amenities always available and accessible.
In working with the Vice-Chancellor, Dean of SA, fellow executives, SRC Members, the Judiciary and other student leaders, I will always ask how our investments in the future will make the University a stronger academic community.
To make the good decisions that will help us achieve these goals, I first need to listen and learn.
No doubt a lot is expected of us. And , we are committed to make you proud.
On behalf of my colleagues, the Presentable Executives of the 18TH Assembly- ALUTA EXCELLENCE,
I re-iterate my strong commitment, that, we will live-up to our campaign promises. We are optimistic, in the length of time, to give you adequate reasons to be proud of us as your leaders. And, in effect, strengthen your confidence in student leadership.
It will, most certainly, be a thing of great joy, and relief to both staff and students, that, the success and reality of projects enlisted in our campaign promises is achieved among other things. Even more palpable, if brought to life, during my administration as SUG President.
Once again, I stand on behalf of over 20,000 Nigerian students of FUTO, to salute the immediate past SUG Executive, SRC and the Judicial Council, respectively. Ably led by Comr. Ezenwa Obinna E., Rt. Hon. Barr. Manuel Herbert, and Rt. Hon. Justice Ethelbert Moughara E. For how well, they have discharged their duties and coordinated their respective councils. They are deserving of our commendations.
So, well done, for a job well done.
The work load is taxing, and we are here to take-up the challenge. But then, it beckons all hands to be on deck, so that we can effectively discharge our mandate. And accordingly, vindicate the confidence you have reposed in us.
Our loving Vice Chancellor, other dignitaries here present, my inaugural and acceptance speech would be incomplete, if, I fail to respectfully appeal for your maximum support for myself as the “primus-inte-pares”- first among equals, and my colleagues whom you have embraced to serve the School.
It is no secret, that, without your cooperation and unwavering support, there is absolutely no way we can succeed. Please, do not forget, that, the success of the ALUTA EXCELLENCE administration is your success and for that matter the success of FUTO at large.
Indeed, Excellence has come, so let’s all embrace it wholeheartedly for love of God and country.
Thank you… remain PRESENTABLE and, God bless.
Long Live ALUTA EXCELLENCE!!!
Long Live FUTO SUG!!!
